Balenciaga took to the gym for pre-fall. Vogue called it the perfect backdrop for what they described as an ongoing love affair with technical outerwear — cropped jackets with blouson hems, in techy fabrics, as the light layer for transitional dressing. Christopher Esber, Kallmeyer and Miu Miu all have versions.
And it is new. Technical does not appear anywhere on the fall or spring trend lists for this year. It arrives as one of the ten defining trends of the Resort 2027 season, alongside elevated sportswear — the two of them making the same argument from different directions.
What you are actually paying for is the fabric, and the houses are not shy about it. Moncler Grenoble uses GORE-TEX PACLITE®, wind- and waterproof and still breathable, with heat-sealed seams. Prada cuts its blouson in Re-Nylon, made from recycled plastic collected in the ocean and endlessly regenerable. Miu Miu works in technical silk. Alaïa takes a lightweight shell and enriches it with silk for softness and lustre.
At the other end, the argument is craft rather than engineering. Leset garment-dyes its Kyoto cotton and cuts it in Los Angeles. RÙADH builds its poplin in double layers for what it calls marshmallowy volume. BIRROT, founded in Copenhagen in 2018, takes its name from the Korean word for drawing a process to its conclusion.

The shape the season is built on — cropped, gathered at the hem, cut to sit away from the body. Miu Miu's technical silk comes with a lined drawstring hood and a fit that runs two sizes large by design. Prada's Re-Nylon has a shirt collar and an elasticated drawstring hem the house says recalls the sportswear world. RÙADH cuts crisp cotton poplin in double layers, garment-dyed blush pink, with a high drawstring neck and gold hardware.
Where the engineering is the whole proposition. Alaïa's hooded windbreaker is cut from lightweight shell enriched with silk for softness and lustre, in navy. Moncler Grenoble's Valles is GORE-TEX PACLITE® with a structured visor on the hood, heat-sealed seams and an internal drawstring at the waist. AGOLDE's Lydia is breathable nylon with a three-quarter zip, high collar and snap cuffs, made in the USA.

The everyday half, and where the price drops without the idea dropping with it. Kallmeyer is a New York label whose founder designs pieces that blur the lines between masculine structure and feminine fluidity. BIRROT works in technical fabrics from Copenhagen. Leset's Kyoto is garment-dyed cotton with a high neck and a billowy silhouette, cut in Los Angeles. Mare Mare — established in Costa Rica, developed in Italy, designed in Miami — brings it under a hundred and thirty dollars.
The two that lean furthest into where all of this came from. Balenciaga's technical track jacket comes out of the pre-fall collection Vogue used to frame the whole trend. LoveShackFancy's Kariana goes the other way entirely — cropped, all-over floral, a fixed hood and a bubble hem, for anyone who wants the shape without the seriousness.
